How to Know Your Size and Practical Tips

First tip: You should have a tailor—ask for recommendations from a family member or friend. This helps avoid ruining your suit. Always go to someone with experience; with a professional, your suit will be properly fitted and customized to your taste.

Second tip: Dry clean only. This helps preserve the color, texture, and extends the life of your suit.

Third tip: You should own several suits so you can rotate them. This reduces wear and tear and helps your suits last much longer.

GUIDE: HOW TO MEASURE YOUR SUIT SIZE

  • Use a soft measuring tape.

Chest measurement:
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, passing the tape under your arms. Keep your arms relaxed at your sides. Make sure the tape is not too tight—leave space for one finger between the tape and your body. Preferably measure while wearing a shirt or light clothing.

Waist measurement:
Measure around your waist at navel level or where you normally wear your belt. Do not measure over your pants.

After measuring, write down your chest and waist measurements. Use the Chest and Waist Size Chart to determine your size, then refer to the Sleeve Length Chart based on your height in feet.

SLEEVE LENGTH SIZE GUIDE

Determine if you are:

  • S (Short): Height from 5’4” to 5’7”
  • R (Regular): Height from 5’8” to 5’11”
  • L (Long): Height from 6’0” to 6’3”

EXAMPLE

My measurements:

  • Chest: 42”
  • Waist: 37”
  • Height: 5’7”

Based on my chest, I am a size 42. Based on my waist (37”), I might consider size 44—but I choose size 42 because it fits my chest better. Size 44 would be too wide in the chest and too long in the sleeves.

Altering sleeves and chest can cost around $90.00, while adjusting only the waist of the pants costs about $18.00—so choosing the correct size saves money.
